In 2021, I had my first encounter with the Tata Harrier equipped with an automatic transmission. My initial fascination with the SUV still stands strong after testing the 2023 Tata Harrier on the bustling streets of Pune. This time, I explored the manual transmission variant, uncovering several aspects that were previously overlooked in the earlier generation. While the Harrier might not directly compete with popular rivals in its segment of 5-seater SUVs, it does pose a significant challenge to these mid-size SUVs. The increasing number of Harriers on the roads attests to its popularity. Priced previously between Rs 15-25 lakh (ex-showroom) and positioned below its elder sibling, the Tata Safari, this 5-seater SUV showcases Tata’s engineering expertise. Built on Tata’s OMEGA ARC architecture, derived from Land Rover’s D8 platform, the 2023 Harrier boasts upgrades that make it a standout choice in the competitive SUV market. Here are our first impressions after driving through Pune’s busy streets.

What has changed on the outside?
The 2023 Tata Harrier maintains its familiar silhouette but now features cosmetic enhancements, blending modernity with functionality. Upfront, the LED DRLs are connected by a thin strip, akin to the 2023 Nexon. The front grille, named the parametric grille, showcases subtle silver elements. The revamped bumper hosts new vertical headlamps and air curtains that enhance aerodynamics around the front tires. The rear sees minimal changes, including a redesigned bumper, a thin strip connecting the LED taillamps, a larger skid plate, and a new setup for the fog lamps. Profile changes are notable, offering 17, 18, and 19-inch wheel options (limited to the #Dark variant). The doors feature bold Harrier badging, and blacked-out window trims add a touch of sophistication. Tata Motors also introduces fresh colour choices such as Sunlit Yellow, Coral Red, and Seaweed Green, along with unique interior ‘personas’ tailored to each variant.

What has changed on the inside?
Stepping inside, the 2023 Harrier welcomes you with a reimagined dashboard, addressing past ergonomic concerns. Despite concerns about scuff marks due to the extensive use of piano black panels, the cabin exudes a premium feel. The Sunlit Yellow variant features matching interiors, while other colour options incorporate faux wood or black finishes, adding to the vehicle’s sophistication. Space and comfort are significantly improved, addressing previous issues like the driver’s knees touching the dashboard.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, coupled with a powerful 10-speaker JBL sound system, enhances the driving experience. The all-new four-spoke Electric Power Steering wheel, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and paddle shifters (available in automatic variants) contribute to the Harrier’s modern feel. Other features include electronically powered seats, dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, advanced safety features like a 360-degree camera, forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control.

How safe are you with the 2023 Tata Harrier?
The Harrier 2023 prioritizes safety, offering six airbags, a driver knee airbag, front and rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, stability control, and auto-dimming IRVM. Innovative additions like Rear-collision Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go cater to Indian driving conditions.

How does it perform and ride?
Under the hood, the Harrier houses a potent 2-litre diesel engine generating 170PS and 350Nm, paired with a smooth 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission. While the manual variant requires effort for gear changes, the automatic option promises a convenient urban driving experience. The diesel engine offers superb low-end and mid-range pull, enabling brisk overtakes even at high speeds. The Harrier handles rough roads comfortably, providing a smooth ride. The updated steering enhances the driving experience, offering a more connected feel and eliminating the previous steering kickback issue. The Harrier performs well on braking, although the pedal feel is slightly mushy due to its weight.

Should you buy one?
With its imminent October 17 launch, the 2023 Tata Harrier is set to redefine the SUV landscape. While the absence of a petrol engine is noticeable, Tata’s comprehensive upgrades have elevated the Harrier’s standing. The new steering, advanced tech features, and striking design enhancements make it a compelling choice. Despite minor imperfections, the Harrier now stands as a complete package, making it a worthy investment. Prepare to witness an influx of these refined SUVs on the roads as the Tata Harrier 2023 captures hearts and minds alike.
