Celebrating its legacy, the MINI 3 Door hard-top continues to capture hearts with its iconic design and go-kart-like driving experience. As a dedicated fan of the MINI brand, having previously driven the Convertible, the JCW, and the Cooper S, the recent encounter with the 2021 facelift of the Cooper S left me eager to explore its nuances. Over four thrilling days, I put the MINI through the paces, incorporating daily office runs, a Pune-Mumbai-Pune chase, and even some wedding shopping for a friend. Gosh! There is enough space for those colossal bags. Speaking of which, this road test review delves into the design, engine performance, ride and handling, safety features, and the tech-laden interior, all from the perspective of a tall-framed individual who values performance and the emotional connection with the car.
Subtle evolution with a dash of sparkle
Approaching the MINI 3-Door hard-top, the refreshed front grille immediately grabs attention with a bold body-coloured horizontal strip, a departure from the previous all-black treatment. Complemented by a redesigned bumper, the side body indicators seamlessly integrate into the side scuttle, presenting a sleek profile. The headlamp cluster receives subtle tweaks, and the iconic round LED daytime running lights retain their distinct identity. The taillights maintain the retro-cool Union Jack motif, while the new bumper and diffuser at the rear add a touch of aggression. In Sparkling Red with white mirror caps, my test car exuded vibrancy, aligning perfectly with the MINI’s spirited personality. Additional colour options, such as Island Blue and Rooftop Grey, contribute to the MINI’s ability to stand out on the road, evoking a sense of individuality and style.
Peppy powerhouse with a growly soul
Under the hood, the 2.0 turbocharged engine on the Cooper S delivers a performance that lives up to the MINI’s spirited character. Slightly updated for 2021, the engine produces an ample 189 bhp and 280 Nm of peak torque, accompanied by a growly soundtrack that adds to the driving experience. The 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) Steptronic gearbox ensures seamless power delivery, with an optional 7-speed DCT Sport Steptronic available for enthusiasts. The Cooper S achieves a 0-100 dash time of 6.7 seconds, showcasing its dynamic prowess. As I pushed the accelerator, the exhilaration of the growling engine resonated with my heartbeat, creating a symphony of automotive passion.
The perfect blend of comfort and sportiness
While the MINI has evolved to a softer feel in recent generations, the 2021 facelift maintains the brand’s essence while enhancing NVH levels specific to the suspension. Though some might argue it takes away from the direct character MINIs are known for, the improved comfort is appreciated, especially in Indian driving conditions. The drive modes now simplify to Green, Mid, and Sport, with Sport mode unleashing the car’s true potential. The handling remains taut, the steering precise, and the dual-clutch box, while lacking a manual option in India, proves to be quick and enjoyable, especially with the paddles in play. It’s not just a drive; it’s a connection, a conversation between the car and the driver, each manoeuvre bringing a smile that lingers.
Standard features for peace of mind
The MINI 3 Door hard-top prioritizes safety with standard features like cornering brake control, antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, brake assist, and crash sensors. Dual airbags and 3-point seatbelts ensure the well-being of occupants. Optional extras, including adaptive suspension, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control with emergency braking, and tire pressure monitoring, enhance safety further. It’s essential to note that the MINI is strictly a 4-seater. The peace of mind these features provide translates into a worry-free journey, allowing the driver to focus on the sheer joy of driving.
Mild upgrades for a modern touch
Inside the cabin, subtle changes include an updated 8.8-inch touchscreen with improved touch response, a redesigned AC vents layout, and new finishes for the dash and door inlays. Optional digital screens for instruments and a head-up display unit add a futuristic touch. Optional tech features such as a wireless phone charger, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and a Harmon Kardon sound system enhance the driving experience. The interior becomes a personal sanctuary, a space where technology seamlessly integrates with emotion, creating an environment where every drive feels like an adventure.
Accommodating the every day and more
The MINI 3 Door hard-top accommodates comfortably a taller individual, debunking the myth that MINIs are only for the vertically challenged. The boot space, though not massive, proves practical for daily use and shopping sprees. The emphasis on urban mobility, long drives, and practicality is evident in the MINI’s design and functionality. It’s not just a car; it’s a companion, understanding and adapting to the needs of its driver, making every journey enjoyable and effortless.
Niche appeal and unwavering fun
As the MINI 3 Door hard-top retains its niche appeal, its enduring charm lies in its commitment to fun driving above all else. Prices starting at Rs 38 lakh for the hard-top and Rs 44 lakh for the convertible, the MINI Cooper S remains an attractive option in its segment. While the range has evolved, the hope is that MINIs will continue to focus on delivering a driving experience centred around sheer enjoyment. The MINI 3 Door hard-top, with its subtle updates and unwavering personality, proves that driving can indeed be a thrilling and joyful experience, even for those with a taller frame just like me. It’s not just a detailed road test experience; instead, it’s a testament to the emotions evoked by the MINI, a celebration of the joy that comes with every twist of the key and every turn of the wheel.
