It’s always a special moment when a new set of wheels enters the DAG India garage, but this one feels different. The Lexus ES 300h, my new long term luxury hybrid, has already begun weaving itself into our daily routines, redefining what it means to commute with calm and class.

Over the past month, I’ve used it the way it’s meant to be experienced: on the chaos laden streets of Pune, on quick expressway hops, and on lazy weekend detours. The verdict so far? This saloon makes the mundane feel special.

FAMILIAR YET FRESH

This isn’t my first dance with the ES 300h. I had driven the previous iteration long enough to know its strengths silky refinement, acres of rear seat space, and that ever-dependable hybrid powertrain. The latest iteration, though, greets us with subtle but effective upgrades.

At first glance, the newly tweaked spindle grille, sharper headlamps, and refined 18 inch alloys give the ES a sharper presence. Parked next to the German rivals, it holds its own without shouting for attention quieter confidence has always been Lexus’s game.

Step inside, and the cabin feels reassuringly familiar, with exceptional fit and finish, plush leather, and that signature Lexus hush. The big change is tech: the 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen now sits within easier reach, angled slightly towards the driver.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto finally feel seamless, while rear passengers still enjoy the spoils of comfort three-zone climate control, sunshades, and generous space that makes being chauffeured a delight.

LIVING WITH A HYBRID

A month in, what strikes us most is how effortlessly the ES 300h adapts to city life. Early mornings mean pure EV mode gliding silently past sleepy neighborhoods, the only sound being gravel crunching under the tires.

Hit a traffic snarl, and instead of frustration, there’s an odd sense of serenity. The hybrid powertrain switches between petrol and electric without fuss, and the e-CVT transmission is so unobtrusive you forget it’s working.

On the expressway, it isn’t blistering quick, but that was never its brief. What it does offer is a beautifully balanced ride. The suspension calmly irons out rough patches, while sound insulation cocoons you from the outside world.

At the end of a workday, sliding into the ES feels like stepping into a private lounge on wheels, a little sanctuary against the grind.

FUEL EFFICIENCY SO FAR

Hybrids promise numbers, and the ES delivers. In our first month, city commutes have returned 17–18 kmpl, an impressive figure for a car of this size. Out on the expressway, it hovers around 15–16 kmpl. With a tank range stretching comfortably past 800 km, refueling has been less frequent than expected, a welcome relief in daily use.

REACTIONS FROM THE REAR SEAT

The ES 300h has quickly become the family favorite. Rear passengers love the acres of legroom, the plush recline, and the ability to disappear from the world thanks to window shades and hushed insulation.

One visiting relative summed it up perfectly: “This doesn’t feel like a car it feels like a moving lounge.” Even the infotainment upgrade has drawn praise, with Apple Car Play keeping long journeys lively and the rear climate zone ensuring no bickering over temperatures.

FIRST MONTH TAKEAWAY

Long-term reports are about honesty, and here’s mine: the Lexus ES 300h isn’t perfect. The dealership network in India remains limited, which makes you plan service runs more carefully than you would with the German rivals. And while the hybrid system is supremely efficient in urban commutes, enthusiasts might crave more drama when pushing it hard.

But these are small trade-offs for what the ES 300h delivers in daily life refinement, comfort, and a reduced carbon footprint without compromise on luxury. At ₹64 lakh for the ES 300h Exquisite and ₹69 lakh for the ES 300h Luxury, it’s not cheap, but for those who value serenity over speed and elegance over flash, it makes a compelling case.

LOOKING FORWARD

A month in the ES has already become more than just another car in our fleet it has become the one we reach for when the day looks long and traffic looks worse. Over the next few weeks, we’ll see how it holds up on longer road trips, highway cruises, and perhaps even a monsoon run. For now, though, the Lexus ES 300h has already proven that luxury can be both calming and conscious.

And, in the DAG India garage, that’s a welcome addition, delivering elegance without sacrificing efficiency.
