A swooping roofline, a whisper-quiet drive, and an electrifying personality the Volvo C40 Recharge brings Scandinavian chic to Indian roads.
If the XC40 Recharge was Volvo’s measured first step into India’s EV space, the C40 Recharge is its leap of confidence. We spent a few days with it at our Pune HQ, and the car left us not only impressed but also rethinking what a Volvo stands for. Traditionally, the Swedish brand has been synonymous with sensibility, safety, and cool restraint. The C40 Recharge, however, turns that formula on its head it’s stylish, quick, tech-savvy, and very much an EV for those who want their green choices to also carry a generous dose of flair.

COUPE WITH CHARACTER
If the XC40 Recharge was Volvo’s sensible EV, the C40 Recharge is its From the front, the C40 Recharge looks familiar, almost identical to its sibling, the XC40 Recharge. The signature Thor’s hammer LED headlights are present and sharper now with pixel tech, giving them an intelligent glow, especially in poor weather. Walk around to the side, though, and the C40’s personality reveals itself the roofline plunges dramatically after the B pillar, lending it that SUV coupé silhouette so coveted in the premium market.
At the rear, Volvo’s designers have been playful. The segmented taillights wrap around the corners and extend into the hatch, while a split roof spoiler adds muscle. Park it anywhere in Pune, and it stands out. Unlike the XC40, which hides its power under an upright design, the C40 dares you to notice it.

INSIDE THE SCANDINAVIAN COCOON
Step inside, and the first thing that strikes you is the absence of leather. Volvo has gone fully vegan here, using recycled plastics, PET bottles, and natural fibres to put together a cabin that feels modern yet responsibly premium. Surprisingly, there’s no sense of compromise. The seats are upholstered in suede-like textiles, the dashboard wears textured inlays inspired by topography, and soft-touch panels line the doors.

The highlight is the fixed panoramic sunroof it floods the cabin with natural light and makes the interior feel larger. The downside? No sunblind. On hot Pune afternoons, the AC has to work harder, though insulation keeps things under control.
Up front, the 9-inch vertical touchscreen running Google’s Android Automotive remains intuitive, though it now looks modest next to the massive displays of rivals like the Kia EV6. That said, integrated Google Maps, voice assistance, and seamless smartphone syncing
make life easy. A crisp 12.3-inch digital cluster backs it up, keeping the driver well-informed without clutter.
Comfort is classic Volvo the front seats are supremely supportive, cocooning you in a way that makes long hours on the Expressway a pleasure. In the rear, however, the swooping roofline steals some headroom. Taller passengers might feel hemmed in, though legroom is generous. The boot shrinks slightly to 413 litres, but there’s a handy 31-litre frunk for charging cables or a backpack.
SILENT UNTIL YOU PRESS THE PEDAL
Start the C40 Recharge and well, you don’t. There’s no start button. Simply sit, buckle up, put it in Drive, and you’re away silently. The lack of ceremony contrasts with what the car is capable of, because the moment you press down on the accelerator, the C40 erupts forward.

With 402BHP and 660Nm from its dual motor setup, the C40 does 0-100 kmph in just 4.7 seconds. That’s sportscar-quick in a family SUV body. Around our Pune test routes, overtaking was less a manoeuvre and more a thought you spot a gap, tap the throttle, and the car rockets ahead.
But what makes the C40 stand out is the way it blends speed with serenity. At highway pace, it’s whisper-quiet, the suspension absorbing imperfections with composure. Push it harder, and while the steering feels a tad light, the car remains planted, its rear-biased power delivery adding a sporty flavour. It’s not an outright driver’s car, but spirited driving
SILENT YET SAVAGE
Start the C40 Recharge and… well, you don’t. There’s no start button. Simply sit, buckle up, put it in Drive, and you’re away silently. The lack of ceremony contrasts with what the car is capable of, because the moment you press down on the accelerator, the C40 erupts forward.

ANXIETY-FREE MILES
One of the biggest highlights is range. With its 78 kWh battery pack and a more aerodynamic profile than the XC40, the C40 Recharge claims 530 kilometres (WLTP) on a full charge. In real-world traffic and weekend runs, you can expect 430 450 kilometres, comfortably above the 350-kilometre threshold where range anxiety sets in.
Charging, too, is straightforward. Plugging into a 150 kW DC fast charger takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 28 minutes. A more common 50 kW charger will do it in about an hour. At home, the 11 kW wall box becomes routine leave it overnight and wake up to a fully charged car.

In a city like Pune, where charging infrastructure is expanding across malls, hotels, and offices, the C40 slots seamlessly into daily life. For longer trips, the combination of real-world range and fast charging means you spend less time planning around chargers and more time enjoying the drive.
THE TRADE-OFF
The C40 is not perfect, and Volvo doesn’t pretend otherwise. Rear visibility is poor thanks to the sloping glasshouse, forcing reliance on the 360-degree camera and wing mirrors. Rear seat comfort, too, is compromised for taller occupants. And the boot, while usable, isn’t class-leading for a family hauler.
Yet, Volvo has chosen style over space here, and in many ways, that decision pays off. The C40 Recharge feels special. It looks more desirable than its SUV sibling and drives with a character that’s slightly rebellious by Volvo standards.
VOLVO’S UNSHAKABLE FORTE

Where the C40 Recharge doesn’t compromise is safety. You get seven airbags, ADAS features like collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera. Euro NCAP’s 5-star crash rating seals the deal. Driving through Pune’s traffic, these features work quietly in the background, stepping in when needed without being intrusive.
SCANDINAVIAN DESIRE
Priced around ₹67 68 lakh on road, the Volvo C40 Recharge doesn’t undercut rivals like the Kia EV6 but positions itself as the stylish alternative to its own XC40 sibling. For that premium, you’re buying exclusivity, design, and a sense of occasion every single time you step in.
Is it practical? Not entirely. Is it desirable? Absolutely. The C40 Recharge combines shattering performance, top class safety, and everyday usability in a package that finally allows Volvo to show its fun side.
For those in Pune or anywhere else in India who want an EV that feels premium, looks striking, and offers range confidence without intimidation, the Volvo C40 Recharge is one of the most compelling choices today.
Because sometimes, being sensible all the time is just boring.
