Volvo Cars has introduced new long-range plug-in hybrid variants of the XC60 and XC90, bringing significantly more electric driving capability, updated styling, advanced safety technology and Google Gemini integration. The XC60 offers up to 200 km of electric range, while the XC90 delivers up to 160 km on a single charge.

Volvo Cars has expanded its electrified SUV portfolio with the launch of its first-ever long-range plug-in hybrid variants for the European and American markets. The new versions of the best-selling Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90are designed to combine the advantages of electric driving for everyday journeys with the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer trips.

The biggest development is the increase in electric range. The new XC60 can travel up to 200 kilometres on electric power, while the XC90 can cover up to 160 kilometres. Volvo says the electric range of both SUVs is now more than 2.5 times higher than that of their existing plug-in hybrid versions. 

Larger Battery and More Powerful Electric Motor

The substantial increase in electric range comes from a new, larger-capacity floor-integrated battery combined with a more powerful electric motor. The petrol engine remains available to take over when required, giving drivers the flexibility associated with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

This approach is central to Volvo Cars’ electrification strategy. Rather than positioning the new PHEVs as a replacement for its fully electric models, Volvo describes them as an important bridge towards a fully electric future. The company says the long electric range can make daily commutes, school runs and weekend journeys possible with electric driving and no tailpipe emissions during those journeys. 

Both the XC60 and XC90 will also continue to be available with mild-hybrid powertrains, giving customers multiple electrification options.

Volvo XC60 Receives Major Design Update

Alongside the new plug-in hybrid technology, the Volvo XC60 receives a comprehensive exterior and interior design update.

The SUV gets redesigned front and rear sections, including an upgraded grille, revised front bumper, bonnet and front wings, as well as new wheels. Volvo has also refined its distinctive Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, while redesigned tailgate, rear LED lamps and rear bumper elements give the SUV a wider and more confident appearance. 

Inside, the XC60 receives a redesigned dashboard and door panels, wood décor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather. Volvo has also enhanced the cabin ambience with upgraded interior illumination, reinforcing the brand’s Scandinavian luxury design philosophy. 

Advanced Safety Technology Remains a Key Highlight

Safety continues to be one of the XC60’s major selling points. The updated SUV features Volvo’s latest active safety technologies, which can respond when the vehicle detects a potential collision.

Depending on the situation, the system can provide warnings, apply automatic emergency braking or use automatic emergency steering to help avoid or reduce the severity of an impact. The vehicle can also alert occupants to an approaching cyclist before a door is opened. 

The XC60’s driver-assistance package is supported by an upgraded combination of radars, cameras and other sensors. Features include lane-change assistance and a 360-degree camera with 3D view, designed to give drivers greater awareness around the vehicle. 

11.2-Inch Display and Google Gemini AI

Technology inside the XC60 also receives a significant upgrade. An 11.2-inch screen provides access to Volvo Car UX and key vehicle information and controls.

One of the most notable additions is Google Gemini, Google’s next-generation AI assistant. Drivers can interact with Gemini using natural language for tasks such as planning journeys, finding stops and managing messages while driving. 

The XC90 also receives Google Gemini integration.

Volvo XC90 Continues as a Seven-Seater Luxury SUV

The Volvo XC90 continues to serve as the brand’s large premium family SUV. The seven-seater combines Scandinavian design, comfort and safety with a spacious cabin designed for long-distance travel.

The interior features premium materials, natural light and wood décor, while an optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system is available for an enhanced in-car audio experience. The XC90’s latest updates build on its existing technology and design package while introducing the new long-range plug-in hybrid powertrain. 

Over-the-Air Updates and Black Edition

The new XC60 and XC90 will benefit from regular over-the-air software updates, allowing Volvo to improve the vehicle experience after purchase.

Volvo has also confirmed that order books for the new XC60 and XC90, including Black Edition variants, are open from September 15, 2026, in selected markets. Production is scheduled to begin later in autumn 2026. 

However, Volvo notes that the quoted electric-range figures are preliminary WLTP figures obtained under specific testing conditions. Real-world range can vary based on factors including charge level, vehicle specification, outdoor and battery temperature, weather, topography, driving style and speed. Feature availability can also vary by market, with some functions being optional or requiring customer opt-in. 

Volvo’s Strategy Toward Full Electrification

The new long-range XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids form part of Volvo Cars’ wider transition toward full electrification. The company says these models provide an additional path for customers who want substantially more electric driving capability while retaining the flexibility of a petrol engine.

Volvo Cars has stated its ambition to become a fully electric car maker and has a longer-term commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, with an ambition to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. In 2025, the company sold more than 710,000 vehicles, with electrified models accounting for 46% of its sales.

With up to 200 km of electric range, the updated Volvo XC60 could cover a significant portion of everyday driving without using its petrol engine, while the XC90 brings a substantial 160 km electric range to the large seven-seat luxury SUV segment. Combined with refreshed styling, enhanced safety systems, AI-powered Google Gemini functionality and over-the-air updates, the new PHEVs represent a major evolution of Volvo’s existing SUV lineup.
