Global electric vehicle leader BYD has introduced its 2nd Generation Blade Battery along with its new FLASH Charging Technology, marking a major leap forward in electric mobility innovation. Announced in Shenzhen, China on March 6, 2026, the new technology aims to tackle two of the biggest concerns in the EV industry slow charging speeds and poor battery performance in extremely cold temperatures.
With this breakthrough, BYD has achieved a record-breaking EV charging speed, allowing a battery to charge from 10% to 70% State of Charge (SOC) in just five minutes, and reach 97% charge in only nine minutes. The company also revealed that even in harsh conditions such as 30°C, charging from 20% to 97% takes only three minutes longer than charging at room temperature. This advancement significantly improves usability for EV owners in colder regions where battery performance often drops.
Despite the rapid growth of the global electric vehicle market, many consumers still face challenges such as range anxiety, long waiting times at charging stations, and slower charging speeds during winter months. BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu highlighted that overcoming these issues remains crucial for accelerating EV adoption worldwide.
NEXT GENERATION BATTERY INNOVATION
The 2nd Generation Blade Battery is the result of six years of intensive research and development. BYD has successfully resolved a common engineering challenge in EV batteries balancing high energy density with ultra fast charging capability. Compared to its predecessor, the new battery offers 5% higher energy density while dramatically improving charging performance.
Equipped with this advanced battery technology, the DENZA Z9GT electric vehicle can achieve a class-leading driving range of up to 1,036 kilometres. To further enhance performance and safety, BYD introduced innovative technologies such as the Lithium Ion High Speed Channel and a Full-Spectrum Intelligent Thermal Management System, designed to reduce heat generation and improve heat dissipation during high-speed charging.
The battery also exceeds China’s national safety standards, reinforcing BYD’s philosophy that “safety is the ultimate luxury of new energy vehicles.”
FLASH CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSION
Supporting this next-generation battery is BYD’s newly developed FLASH Charging technology, which features a world-leading single connector charging output of 1500 kW. The system works alongside a high capacity energy storage solution that helps manage grid load and avoids stressing local power infrastructure.
BYD has also unveiled an ambitious infrastructure roadmap. The company plans to build 20,000 FLASH Charging Stations across China, with a global rollout scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
To improve user convenience, the charging system includes the world’s first T-shaped pulley charger with a “Zero Gravity” design, making it easier for users to handle the charging connector while keeping cables clean and off the ground.
ACCELERATING GLOBAL EV ADOPTION
BYD’s latest innovations are aligned with its long-term sustainability vision known as the “Three Green Dreams.” Introduced in 2006, the initiative focuses on integrating solar energy, energy storage, and charging infrastructure to accelerate the electrification of global mobility.
With the launch of the 2nd Generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging technology, BYD continues to push the boundaries of EV innovation while supporting the global transition toward cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transportation.
