BYD India has officially showcased its globally acclaimed DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology in India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition toward intelligent and sustainable mobility. The technology, which will soon debut in BYD’s future products for the Indian market, promises an electric-first driving experience while delivering a combined driving range of over 1,200km.

The introduction of DM-i technology reinforces BYD’s commitment to accelerating New Energy Vehicle (NEV) adoption in India. Unlike conventional hybrid systems that rely primarily on a petrol engine, BYD’s DM-i architecture prioritizes electric power for daily driving needs. The petrol engine acts mainly as a generator or support system, ensuring maximum efficiency and reduced fuel consumption while retaining the convenience of long-distance travel.

At the heart of the DM-i system is BYD’s highly efficient 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine, which achieves an impressive thermal efficiency of 43.04 percent. Working alongside high-speed electric motors, the powertrain intelligently switches between EV Mode, HEV Series Mode, and HEV Parallel Mode depending on driving conditions and battery status. This enables smooth performance, lower emissions, and optimized energy usage.

BYD claims the technology delivers several advantages, including acceleration from 0-100kmph in under 5.5 seconds, fuel efficiency as low as 4.8 litres per 100km under NEDC conditions, excellent NVH refinement, and a driving experience comparable to a pure electric vehicle. The system is also paired with BYD’s renowned Blade Battery technology, which enhances safety, thermal stability, and long-term durability.

The company believes DM-i technology will address some of the biggest challenges facing EV adoption in India, including range anxiety and charging infrastructure limitations. By combining electric-first mobility with the flexibility of a hybrid powertrain, BYD aims to offer consumers a practical bridge between traditional internal combustion vehicles and fully electric cars.

Globally, BYD has sold over 8 million plug-in hybrid vehicles and commands more than 35 percent of the global PHEV market. In India, the company has already crossed 14,000 customers and currently operates 48 showrooms across 40 cities. With DM-i technology set to play a central role in BYD’s India roadmap for 2026 and beyond, the brand is positioning itself at the forefront of the country’s next phase of electrified mobility.
