BMW has officially unveiled the fifth-generation X5, introducing one of the most technologically advanced versions of its flagship Sports Activity Vehicle to date. The new model embraces the brand’s Neue Klasse design philosophy while offering an unprecedented choice of petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and future hydrogen-powered variants, making it the first BMW model to feature five different powertrain technologies.

Fresh Design with Stronger Road Presence

The new BMW X5 receives a completely redesigned exterior that combines muscular proportions with cleaner surfaces and a more modern appearance. A vertically positioned illuminated kidney grille, new double-X lighting signature, flush BMW Winglet door handles and wheel options up to 23 inches give the SUV a more commanding road presence while improving aerodynamics.

BMW has also introduced new welcome and goodbye lighting animations, along with additional personalization options including multiple exterior colours and M Performance accessories.

Luxury Cabin Inspired by Neue Klasse

Inside, the X5 adopts BMW’s latest Panoramic iDrive interface powered by BMW Operating System X. The cabin features a full-width Panoramic Vision display, a free-floating central touchscreen, optional passenger display, redesigned multifunction steering wheel and premium materials including slate and crystal glass trim.

Comfort features include sports seats as standard, optional massage and ventilated seats, four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system with Dolby Atmos support and enhanced ambient lighting throughout the cabin.

Multiple Powertrain Choices

The new X5 lineup includes petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild-hybrid technology, two plug-in hybrid variants and the all-new fully electric BMW iX5. The electric version is powered by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, offering up to 845 km of WLTP range, 800V architecture and charging speeds of up to 460 kW. BMW has also confirmed that a hydrogen-powered iX5 will join the lineup at a later stage.

Launch Timeline

Production of the new BMW X5 will begin at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in August 2026, with global deliveries of combustion-engine variants scheduled for late November 2026. The battery-electric and plug-in hybrid versions will follow in early 2027.

With its expanded range of powertrains, advanced digital technology and luxury-focused interior, the new BMW X5 marks a significant evolution of BMW’s iconic SUV. The model aims to offer customers greater flexibility while reinforcing BMW’s commitment to electrification without abandoning traditional powertrain options.
