The full-size SUV segment in India has long been defined by a handful of familiar names. Buyers here value presence as much as performance, and reputation often carries as much weight as the specification sheet. Into this fiercely contested territory steps the Majestor, a new flagship SUV from MG Motors India, that arrives with bold ambitions and an equally bold design.

Built on the foundations of the MG Gloster, but positioned as a more premium and capable offering, the Majestor is not being presented as a mere facelift or mid-life update. Instead, MG sees it as a step forward, one that seeks to challenge established rivals with a blend of technology, luxury and genuine off-road capability.

And after experiencing it on launch day and spending time behind the wheel on the roads and trails of Amby Valley in Lonavala, it is clear that MG has created something far more significant than a cosmetic refresh.

PRESENCE MATTERS

The Majestor certainly knows how to make an entrance. The front end is dominated by a massive grille, flanked by distinctive vertical LED lighting elements that give the SUV a strong identity. Viewed from the side, the long bonnet, upright stance and substantial dimensions immediately communicate full-size SUV credentials.

The rear treatment feels cleaner and more premium than before, completing a design that looks expensive without appearing overly dramatic. Whether parked outside a luxury hotel or navigating urban traffic, the Majestor has the sort of visual presence buyers in this segment demand.

ELEVATED COMFORT

Step inside, and the Majestor begins to reveal its strongest hand. The overall dashboard architecture may feel familiar to Gloster owners, but the cabin has been elevated through richer materials, contrasting finishes, and thoughtful detailing.

Carbon-fibre-inspired trim, generously padded surfaces and premium upholstery contribute to an environment that feels suitably flagship. Twin 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard, while connected technology, camera systems and a host of convenience features ensure the Majestor remains firmly aligned with modern expectations.

Practicality has not been overlooked either. Dual wireless charging pads, generous storage spaces and a comfortable second row make it clear that this SUV has been designed with family use in mind. Even the third row offers reasonable accommodation, particularly given the segment.

STRONG FOUNDATIONS

Power comes from MG’s familiar 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, now producing 212bhp and 478 Nm of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain delivers performance in a relaxed and effortless manner.

This is not a vehicle that encourages aggressive driving. Instead, it excels at covering distance comfortably, with smooth torque delivery and a gearbox that prioritises refinement over urgency. The result is a driving experience that feels well suited to the Majestor’s premium positioning.

BUILT FOR MORE

Where the Majestor begins to separate itself from many rivals is in its off-road hardware. The SUV comes equipped with selectable terrain modes, low-range gearing and three locking differentials — front, centre and rear — a feature set rarely found in this segment.

During our trail drive through the hills surrounding Lonavala, the Majestor tackled loose surfaces, steep inclines and challenging terrain with surprising ease. In most situations, the standard Auto mode proved sufficient, with four-wheel-drive modes and differential locks only required when conditions became genuinely demanding.

It is a level of capability that gives the Majestor genuine credibility beyond the city limits.

COMFORT FIRST

Equally impressive is the way the Majestor rides. The rear suspension setup does an excellent job of isolating occupants from poor road surfaces, delivering a level of comfort that feels notably more polished than many traditional body-on-frame SUVs.

Road imperfections are absorbed with composure, and the cabin remains impressively settled even over broken surfaces. For buyers who spend long hours on highways, this could prove to be one of the SUV’s most compelling qualities.

THE FORTUNER QUESTION

Of course, every discussion about a full-size SUV in India eventually leads to the Toyota Fortuner.

Objectively, the Majestor presents a compelling case. It is larger, offers significantly more features, feels more modern inside and delivers impressive off-road capability. In several measurable areas, it simply offers more SUV for the money.

Yet the challenge facing MG is not merely a product one. The Fortuner’s dominance has been built over decades through reliability, trust, resale value and an unmatched reputation among buyers. Those qualities cannot be replicated overnight.

VERDICT

Viewed purely as an SUV, the MG Majestor gets an extraordinary amount right. It has the road presence buyers expect, the comfort they demand and the technology they increasingly seek. Add genuine off-road credentials and a well-executed cabin, and the result is a flagship SUV that feels remarkably complete.

Whether it can truly challenge the Fortuner remains to be seen. That battle will be decided not only by capability, but by perception. However, one thing is certain: the Majestor is the strongest statement MG has made in India so far.
