In a bold celebration of creativity, craftsmanship, and individuality, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled one of its most artistically ambitious projects to date, the Black Badge Cullinan by renowned contemporary artist Cyril Kongo. The exclusive collaboration transforms the already commanding Black Badge Cullinan into a rolling piece of modern art, merging Rolls-Royce’s bespoke luxury expertise with Kongo’s energetic street-art-inspired visual language.

Limited to just five individually commissioned examples, the project was curated through Rolls-Royce Private Offices in New York, Seoul, and Goodwood, with each vehicle allocated to collectors worldwide. While all five commissions share a common artistic vision, every Cullinan features a completely unique hand-painted interior composition, making each SUV a true one-of-one masterpiece.

The ‘Kongoverse’ Comes to Life

Cyril Kongo describes his artistic interpretation as “The Kongoverse”, a fantasy-inspired universe filled with symbols, mathematical formulas, imagined planets, pyramids, and abstract elements representing imagination and destiny. Rolls-Royce provided the perfect canvas for this concept through the Black Badge Cullinan, the darker and more rebellious alter-ego of the brand’s luxury SUV lineup.

The centrepiece of the collaboration is undoubtedly the hand-painted Starlight Headliner. Featuring 1,344 fibre-optic lights, the roof lining recreates a celestial sky infused with Kongo’s colourful cosmic artwork. References to quantum physics, infinity symbols, and celestial forms are integrated into the composition, creating an immersive artistic atmosphere unlike anything previously seen in a Rolls-Royce.

To realise this intricate vision, Rolls-Royce artisans prepared more than 70 paint colours, allowing Kongo complete creative freedom. The artist personally painted every headliner using airbrushes, brushes, and sponges before collaborating with engineers to individually place each illuminated “star.” The result is a truly bespoke ceiling design that includes another Rolls-Royce first — a shooting star effect extending across the entire length of the cabin roof.

A Fully Immersive Artistic Interior

Beyond the headliner, Kongo’s artistry extends throughout the cabin. The fascia, centre console, rear console, picnic tables, and the rear-seat Waterfall section are all individually hand-painted, creating a seamless flowing composition across 19 separate veneer pieces. Rolls-Royce technicians applied ten layers of lacquer to preserve the artwork while maintaining the brand’s signature mirror-like finish.

The interior colour treatment itself is equally dramatic. The black base cabin is contrasted by four vibrant shades: Phoenix Red for the driver’s seat, Turchese for the front passenger seat, and Forge Yellow and Mandarin for the rear compartment. These bold colours appear across stitching, piping, seat inserts, monograms, and lambswool carpets, reinforcing the SUV’s expressive personality.

Kongo’s signature “tag” motif appears throughout the vehicle, including on the illuminated treadplates, umbrellas hidden inside the doors, embroidered leather surfaces, and even inside the luggage compartment and sun visors, subtle details designed to reward closer inspection.

Bespoke Exterior Design with Multiple Firsts

The exterior styling continues the artistic theme with a striking Blue Crystal Over Black finish. The deep black paintwork is infused with blue particles that shimmer under sunlight, giving the SUV a dynamic appearance depending on lighting conditions.

The collaboration also introduces the first-ever Rolls-Royce Gradient Coachline. One side transitions from Phoenix Red to Forge Yellow, while the opposite side fades from Mandarin to Turchese. Kongo’s graffiti-inspired signature motif is integrated directly into the coachline design, further emphasising the connection between automotive craftsmanship and contemporary street art.

Adding to the individuality, each of the 23-inch Black Badge alloy wheels features differently coloured brake callipers matching the coachline and cabin accents, another first for the British luxury marque.

An Unprecedented Creative Collaboration

According to Rolls-Royce, this project represents the deepest artistic collaboration in the company’s modern history. Rather than simply applying artwork onto the vehicle, Kongo became fully immersed within the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood. The artist worked alongside designers, engineers, and artisans for months, contributing directly to the conception, design, and execution of every detail.

The partnership highlights the increasing overlap between luxury automotive culture and the contemporary art world, where highly personalised creations are becoming valuable collector investments. It also reflects Rolls-Royce’s evolving approach to Bespoke craftsmanship, transforming its vehicles into deeply personal artistic statements rather than traditional luxury automobiles.

Celebrating 10 Years of Black Badge

The Black Badge Cullinan by Cyril Kongo also forms part of Rolls-Royce’s 10-year anniversary celebrations for the Black Badge family. Introduced in 2016, Black Badge models were created for a younger, more daring clientele seeking a bolder expression of Rolls-Royce luxury. Today, the Black Badge lineup includes the Ghost, Cullinan, and fully electric Spectre, each characterised by darker aesthetics, enhanced performance, and highly expressive bespoke detailing.

With all five commissions already spoken for, the Black Badge Cullinan by Cyril Kongo stands as one of the most visually daring and culturally significant Rolls-Royce projects in recent years, a unique fusion of ultra-luxury engineering and modern artistic expression.
