The Tata Altroz iCNG enters a growing premium hatchback segment with one clear objective: to prove that a factory-fitted CNG car no longer has to feel like a compromise. Traditionally, CNG cars have been viewed as practical workhorses, sacrificing boot space, driving dynamics and premium appeal in favour of lower running costs. Tata Motors believes it’s time to change that perception.

After spending considerable time with the Tata Altroz iCNG, including a Mumbai to Pune highway run completed almost entirely on CNG, it’s evident that this isn’t simply an Altroz with gas cylinders installed. Instead, Tata has engineered a premium hatchback that delivers impressive efficiency without compromising comfort, practicality or everyday usability.

TATA ALTROZ iCNG DESIGN: STILL A HEAD TURNER

Visually, Tata has wisely resisted the temptation to make unnecessary changes. The Altroz continues to be one of the most stylish premium hatchbacks on Indian roads, with its sharp front fascia, sleek lighting signature and balanced proportions still looking fresh years after its debut.

The Altroz iCNG receives only subtle exterior updates, including an iCNG badge on the boot. Finished in the striking Dune Glow dual tone shade, our test car looked every bit as premium as its petrol-powered sibling, proving that choosing CNG no longer means settling for a less desirable version.

TATA ALTROZ iCNG PERFORMANCE: EVERYDAY EFFICIENCY WITH SEAMLESS CNG DRIVING

Powering the Tata Altroz iCNG is the familiar 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 89bhp and 115Nm in petrol mode, while CNG mode develops 74bhp and 103Nm.

On paper, those numbers may not seem particularly exciting, but the driving experience tells a different story. The Altroz is designed for everyday commuting, and that’s exactly where it excels. Whether navigating congested city roads or cruising comfortably on the highway, the power delivery remains smooth and predictable.

One of the biggest highlights is Tata’s single ECU technology. Unlike conventional factory-fitted CNG cars that rely on dual ECUs, the Altroz starts directly in CNG mode, saving petrol during every ignition cycle. Even more impressive is the seamless transition between petrol and CNG without noticeable hesitation.

Our test car came equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox. The clutch is light enough to make daily traffic effortless, although the gearbox could feel slightly slicker. Buyers looking for additional convenience can also opt for the AMT variant.

Fuel efficiency remains one of the strongest reasons to consider the Tata Altroz CNG. During our test, the petrol tank indicated a driving range of around 495km, while the CNG system comfortably covered 186.1km before requiring a refill. Completing most of the Mumbai to Pune journey on CNG reinforced its credentials as an excellent long-distance companion with remarkably low running costs.

RIDE AND HANDLING: COMFORT COMES FIRST

Ride quality has always been one of Tata Motors’ strengths, and the Altroz iCNG review continues to highlight that advantage.

To compensate for the additional weight of the twin CNG cylinders, Tata has stiffened the rear suspension by around 15 percent. Fortunately, this has had very little impact on overall comfort. While the suspension feels marginally firmer at lower speeds, it quickly settles into a composed rhythm over broken roads and highway undulations.

Built on Tata’s ALFA architecture, which was designed with alternative powertrains in mind, the Altroz continues to inspire confidence through corners. Body movements remain well controlled, the steering gains weight naturally with speed, and overall handling remains among the best in the premium hatchback segment.

TATA ALTROZ iCNG INTERIOR, BOOT SPACE AND PRACTICALITY

Inside, the cabin feels familiar, modern and well assembled. The layered dashboard continues to look contemporary, while material quality reinforces the Altroz’s premium positioning.

The biggest change is the new digital instrument display featuring separate fuel gauges for petrol and CNG. Passenger comfort remains one of the Altroz’s biggest strengths, thanks to supportive front seats, generous rear legroom, rear AC vents, USB charging and a centre armrest.

One of the biggest USPs of the Tata Altroz iCNG is its innovative twin-cylinder technology. Instead of sacrificing the entire luggage compartment, Tata has neatly packaged the twin CNG cylinders beneath the boot floor, preserving 210 litres of usable luggage space. The spare wheel has also been relocated underneath the vehicle, while a puncture repair kit adds further convenience for everyday ownership.

TATA ALTROZ iCNG SAFETY FEATURES

Safety remains one of Tata Motors’ biggest strengths, and the Altroz iCNG incorporates multiple CNG-specific safety technologies.

These include a fire extinguisher beneath the driver’s seat, automatic switching to petrol if a gas leak is detected, thermal incident protection during extreme heat and a dedicated micro switch that prevents accidental operation while refuelling. The twin CNG cylinders, with a combined water capacity of 60 litres, are securely housed within a reinforced protective cradle for additional peace of mind.

TATA ALTROZ iCNG REVIEW VERDICT: SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

Priced between ₹7.55 lakh and ₹10.55 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata Altroz iCNG successfully redefines expectations from a factory-fitted CNG hatchback. Rather than feeling like a compromise, it feels like a genuinely premium hatchback that also happens to be exceptionally economical to run.

Yes, India’s CNG infrastructure still demands patience, and enthusiasts looking for outright performance may find the naturally aspirated engine a little reserved. However, buyers prioritising low running costs, impressive ride quality, reassuring safety, premium features and everyday practicality will find the Tata Altroz iCNG to be one of the strongest choices in its segment.

Sometimes, the smartest purchase isn’t the one with the biggest performance figures. It’s the one that quietly makes every journey more affordable without taking away the joy of driving.
