Lexus has unveiled the new-generation NX at a global world premiere, bringing a more refined design, upgraded hybrid technology, improved driving dynamics, enhanced safety systems and a new Sensory Concierge cabin experience. The updated luxury SUV is scheduled to reach global markets from the end of 2026.

Lexus has officially unveiled the new NX in a world premiere on September 1, 2026, positioning its compact luxury SUV as a more technologically advanced and electrification-focused model. Developed around the brand’s “DISCOVER YOUR EDGE” theme, the new NX combines sporty driving characteristics with improved comfort, electrified powertrains and a more sophisticated cabin experience. 

The NX has been an important model for Lexus since its debut in 2014 as the brand’s first compact crossover SUV. According to Lexus, cumulative sales had reached approximately 1.9 million units across more than 90 countries and regions by the end of July 2026, making the NX one of the core models in its global SUV portfolio. 

New Lexus NX: What Has Changed?

The latest NX receives extensive updates across its powertrain, chassis, exterior design, interior, electrification technology and safety systems. Lexus says the SUV retains the balance between sportiness and utility that has defined previous generations while evolving specifically for the electrified era. 

New Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Technology

One of the biggest changes is the redesigned hybrid system. Lexus has integrated the transaxle, motor and power control unit into a more compact e-Axle, helping reduce weight and lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity. The inverter also uses silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, which are designed to reduce electrical losses and improve efficiency. 

The NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid receives a newly developed lithium-ion battery. Lexus says battery output increases by 8%, while capacity rises by 30% in the specified development configuration. The PHEV also supports DC fast charging, while a power-operated charging lid adds convenience. The new transverse battery-cell layout and lower battery mounting position are also intended to improve body rigidity, centre of gravity and handling stability. 

Lexus NX Powertrain Specifications

The prototype specification sheet lists three major powertrain configurations:

The new NX measures 4,690 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,660 mm high, with a 2,690 mm wheelbase. Compared with the previous model, overall length increases by 30 mm, while width, height and wheelbase remain unchanged. 

Lexus lists EV range figures for the NX 450h+ at more than 40 miles in North American EPA testing, more than 100 km in Europe under WLTP and more than 140 km in Japan under WLTC, although these figures are marked as tentative because the vehicles remain under development. 

Sharper Driving Dynamics and Improved Ride Comfort

Lexus has also focused heavily on the NX’s chassis and driving characteristics. The company says development involved extensive testing at the Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama and Germany’s Nürburgring, along with testing on public roads. 

The SUV’s floor rigidity has been increased by approximately 25%, while suspension-tower rigidity rises by approximately 30%. These structural improvements are intended to sharpen handling while reducing road noise and improving ride comfort. 

The new NX also gets revised shock absorbers with ultra-low-speed valves, a smaller 360 mm steering wheel, variable-ratio steering and retuned electric power steering. Lexus has additionally revised accelerator response and hybrid battery management to deliver more linear acceleration. 

For AWD variants, the revised E-Four electronic AWD system can continuously drive the rear wheels not only during launches, wheel slip and cornering but also during straight-line driving. Lexus says this improves stability and road contact, particularly on low-traction surfaces such as snow. 

Sportier Lexus NX Exterior Design

The new NX retains its familiar sporty silhouette but adopts a more dynamic interpretation of Lexus’ “VITAL TECH”design theme. The SUV gets a wider and lower visual stance, while functional elements such as the headlamps, cornering lamps and grille have been integrated more seamlessly. 

The exterior also features predominantly black accents for the outer mirrors and mouldings instead of chrome finishes. The headlamps incorporate the turn indicators and DRLs into a distinctive dual-line lighting signature.

At the rear, the NX introduces Lexus’ first “Double L Signature” rear lighting design. Illuminated double-L-shaped elements sit at both ends of the rear light assembly, accompanied by an illuminated Lexus logo. 

Lexus will offer nine exterior colours, including the new Sonic Tellus and the F SPORT-exclusive Titanium Carbide Gray. 

F SPORT Brings a More Aggressive Look

The NX F SPORT gets additional exterior and interior enhancements. It features exclusive front under spoilers, side pontoons and rear corner devices, along with Piano Black finishes for the roof side rails, roof spoiler and rocker panels.

The F SPORT specification also gets 20-inch lightweight, high-rigidity aluminium wheels and red brake calipers. Inside, an all-black instrument panel creates a more driver-focused environment, complemented by contrast stitching. 

New Lexus NX Interior Gets 14-Inch Display

Inside, Lexus has adopted a cleaner, more horizontal dashboard design. The instrument panel incorporates a 12.3-inch digital meter alongside a 14-inch navigation and multimedia display, positioned horizontally to reduce eye movement while driving. 

The cabin also features a redesigned steering wheel and Responsive Hidden Switches with translucent surface panels. Linear and ambient lighting extends from the instrument panel into the door trim, reinforcing the SUV’s horizontal design theme.

Depending on specification, the NX can also be equipped with a Mark Levinson audio system, featuring perforated metal speaker grilles and illuminated rings around the door speakers. 

The interior is offered in five colour choices, including new ABALOS and F SPORT-exclusive PROMINENCE themes. 

Sensory Concierge Adds Lighting, Music and Fragrance

One of the most distinctive features of the new Lexus NX is its Sensory Concierge system. Designed to turn the cabin into a relaxing, living-room-like environment, the system coordinates lighting, music, climate control, seat temperature and fragrance according to three different modes. 

The three modes are:

• INSPIRE: Designed to create an energised atmosphere through an exotic, stimulating rhythm.
• RADIANCE: Creates a focused environment using reflections and shimmering light.
• REVITALIZE: Provides a more relaxing atmosphere inspired by natural rhythms.

The NX will also offer five fragrances, named TENKO, KEIFU, SEIYO, HANYA and SHINMEI. Up to three fragrance cartridges can be installed in the glovebox-mounted fragrance generator, with the scent released through the speaker grille behind the instrument panel. 

Lexus Safety System+ Gets Major Upgrades

Safety technology is another major focus of the new NX. Lexus has upgraded its Lexus Safety System+ with improved object detection, a wider field of view and an extended detection range. The system is designed to provide greater assistance in complex urban environments while reducing driver workload. 

The updated safety suite includes improvements to Radar Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, Pre-Collision System, Driver Monitor, Adaptive High-beam System and Blind Spot Monitor.

Radar Cruise Control can begin deceleration earlier when traffic slows or another vehicle cuts in. Map-linked functions can also assist with deceleration around stop signs, T-intersections, roundabouts, toll booths and curves. 

The Blind Spot Monitor can now detect bicycles and motorcycles travelling alongside the vehicle, while the Panoramic View Monitor gains a 3D View that allows drivers to examine the vehicle’s surroundings from different perspectives. 

For customers who tow, Lexus has also enhanced the NX’s safety systems. Lane Tracing Assist and the Driver Emergency Response System can operate while towing, while the Blind Spot Monitor’s detection range extends around the trailer. 

New Lexus NX: Global Launch Timeline

Lexus has confirmed that the new NX will be introduced across global markets from the end of 2026. The press release does not provide market-specific launch dates, pricing or India-specific specifications at this stage. 

As the model moves closer to its market launches, Lexus is expected to reveal final production specifications, market-specific powertrain combinations, equipment levels and pricing.
