Samsung has expanded its portable storage portfolio with the launch of the P9 and P7 portable SSDs, introducing USB4 connectivity and faster data-transfer capabilities aimed at professionals, creators, gamers and everyday users. The new P Series was showcased at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, held from August 26 to 30. 

According to Samsung, the new drives are designed to address growing storage requirements driven by AI-generated content, ultra-high-resolution video and increasingly large game files. The P9 sits at the top of the range, while the P7 focuses on versatile, high-speed storage for everyday applications. 

Samsung P9 SSD: Up to 4,000MB/s Transfer Speeds

The flagship Samsung P9 uses USB4 connectivity to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s. Samsung says these figures are approximately twice the performance of its previous-generation portable SSDs, including the 4TB T9, which offers speeds of up to 2,000MB/s. 

The P9 also claims the distinction of being the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD supporting speeds of up to 4,000MB/s. Its sustained write performance is designed for professional production workflows, including 12K direct recording, large RAW image files and ultra-high-resolution video editing. The drive was also recognised with a CES 2026 Innovation Award. 

Samsung P7 Targets Everyday Users

The Samsung P7 also features USB4 and is positioned as a versatile storage solution for work, entertainment and everyday use. It is compatible with a broad range of devices, including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and cameras.

For improved durability, Samsung says the P7 has undergone 2-metre drop testing, along with shock and vibration durability testing, making it suitable for users who frequently carry important data while travelling or working outdoors. 

Samsung P9 and P7 Price in India

The new Samsung Portable SSD P Series will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities, with availability beginning in the first week of September, although capacities may vary by market.
