Amazon and Tata Motors have announced plans to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across Amazon’s transportation network in India, marking a significant step towards electrifying the country’s commercial freight sector.

The collaboration will see Tata Motors supply electric trucks to support Amazon’s logistics operations, including the movement of customer shipments between facilities, across cities and along major national highways. The deployment is described as the largest electric-truck deployment by an e-commerce company in India.

Electric Truck Deployment Begins in Delhi

The initial rollout will begin in Delhi during the festive season, when e-commerce and retail freight volumes typically reach their annual peak. Tata Motors’ light- and medium-duty electric trucks will support Amazon’s middle-mile logistics operations, extending fleet electrification beyond last-mile deliveries.

The first batch of electric trucks was flagged off in Delhi in the presence of government officials and representatives from both companies.

Under the arrangement, Tata Motors will supply the vehicles, while Amazon’s carrier partners will own and operate them. The partnership combines Amazon’s logistics network and freight demand with Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle engineering, manufacturing and service capabilities.

2,800km Electric Freight Corridor Planned

A key part of the collaboration is the planned electrification of the 2,800km Delhi–Bengaluru–Chennai corridor along NH48. Spanning seven states and connecting six major e-commerce regions, the route represents an important step towards expanding electric freight operations beyond city limits.

Dedicated charging infrastructure will support the highway deployment, including charging hubs being developed with Yahhvi, a charging infrastructure provider. Amazon has also supported the development of 10 charging yards across India through Yahhvi.

Tata Ultra E.7 Electric Truck: Features and Technology

The initial deployment includes the Tata Ultra E.7, which incorporates several technologies designed for commercial electric transportation.

Key features include:

  • An integrated e-axle.
  • CCS2 fast-charging capability.
  • Regenerative braking.
  • A crash-tested cabin with high-voltage safety systems.
  • A focus on lower operating costs and improved vehicle uptime.

Amazon says the initiative supports its ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company already has more than 15,000 electric vehicles operating across over 500 cities in India.

For Tata Motors, the partnership represents an opportunity to demonstrate how electric commercial vehicles can operate within large-scale logistics networks. The companies aim to accelerate adoption by combining vehicle deployment with charging infrastructure, servicing and operational support.

The success of this rollout could help shape the future of electric freight transportation in India, particularly as charging infrastructure expands along major commercial routes.
